SD Board of Education Adopts
Native Curriculum
On
July 25, 2011, the South Dakota Board of Education adopted core concepts
and standards for teaching Native American history and culture. This is an
exciting first step toward the full implementation of a Native American
curriculum in South Dakota's public schools.
The
adoption of these core concepts and standards, called the "Oceti
Sakowin Essential Understanding and Standards," stem from the 2007
Indian Education Act, which mandated the development of a new Native
American curriculum for South Dakota.
In
2008, Indian Land Tenure Foundation provided a grant to the South Dakota
Department of Education for the development of the core concepts and
standards.

Trust Land Consolidation
Meetings Set
Regional
consultations on the Cobell Trust Land Consolidation Program have now been
scheduled. The meetings provide an opportunity for tribes to give feedback
on a proposed implementation strategy for the disbursement and use of the
$1.9 billion land consolidation fund resulting from the Cobell Settlement.
We strongly urge all tribes to attend these meetings!
The
next meeting is scheduled for Thursday,
August 18 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
