Secretary Chu Invitation to Attend DOE Tribal Leaders Summit

On behalf of Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, I wish to invite you to the Department’s Tribal Summit with American Indian and Alaska Native leaders on May 5, 2011, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC.  The Secretary has invited all 565 federally recognized Tribes to participate in the Summit.

This Summit, with the theme Winning Our Energy Future, will foster discussions among tribal leadership, senior Departmental leadership, and tribal organizations, on the opportunities and challenges related to tribal energy development.  Held in accordance with the Department of Energy’s American Indian and Alaska Native Tribal Government Policy, the Summit helps fulfill the President’s commitment to the government-to-government relationship with tribal nations.  During the White House Tribal Nation’s conference with tribal leaders on December 16, 2010, the President remarked that the administration has worked hard to strengthen the relationship between our nations.  And together, we have developed a comprehensive strategy to help meet the challenges facing Native American communities.

Invited key speakers include:

  • Secretary Tom Vilsack, Department of Agriculture

  • Secretary Ken Salazar, Department of the Interior

  • Administrator Lisa Jackson, Environmental Protection Agency

  • Kimberly Teehee, White House Domestic Policy Council

  • Senator Daniel Akaka, Chair, Committee on Indian Affairs

  • Congressman Don Young, Chair, Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs

More information about the Summit can be found at http://www.energy.gov/indianenergy/tribalsummit.htm.
